Storage

Quality takes time, and it’s worth the wait.

Quality takes time, and it’s worth the wait.

Although most wines come on to the market ready to drink, some wines require a different amount of time to mature in order to reach their peak. So that your wine can develop its full potential over the years, here are a few practical tips on proper storage:

1. Light
Your wine likes a dark environment. Store your wine in a dark place where possible. Too much light will make it age more quickly.

2. Storage temperature
Wines are best stored at an ambient temperature of between 8 and 18 °C. At higher temperatures, the wines will age too quickly and lose their fruitiness. The colour will become brown very quickly and the wine will seem flat and lose its balance.

3. Temperature variations
Your wine likes a constant temperature. Where possible, make sure the temperature variations between day and night are as low as possible in your wine cellar. Temperature variations of 5 °C can be tolerated by wine. For this reason, wines should not be stored in the kitchen due to the high temperature variations the room is usually subjected to.

4. Humidity
Bottles with corks in particular require a consistently high humidity of 50 to 70% in order to achieve good bottle maturation. If the air is too dry, the cork will lose its elasticity. Oxygen can then penetrate the bottle in the gap between the cork and bottle neck and result in undesirable oxidation.

5. Standing or lying down?
Opinions are divided on this one. In our experience, wines with screw tops, fortified or sparkling wines can be stored standing up. Wines with corks should be stored lying down where possible.
